ROLU Furniture Launch Party at DWR

Mies Van Der Rohe once said, “less is more.”  This phase is definitely applicable to ROLU design and art studio’s new furniture line.  The simplistic forms made from exterior grade plywood and OSB particle board give the pieces a raw, unadorned appearance.  The line is inspired by 70′s DIY books and Enzo Mari’s 1974 book “Autoprogettazione.” The italian word autoprogettazione literally translates from auto = self and progettazione = design.  Mari’s idea is to individually execute a project, in this instance, furniture building, to gain personal understanding about the project using simple techniques.

While the furniture has origins in craft roots, ROLU studio is also inspired by minimalist forms.  See the entire line of furniture for yourself at ROLU’s Minneapolis launch at Design Within Reach this Thursday, September 30th from 5-8pm. Refreshments provided by Original Sin Premium Hard Cider will be served. RSVP to minneapolis@dwr.com

MIA’s Chairevolution! and Design and Antiques Fair

Image from artsmia.org

When we think of a work of art, our brains tend to go towards paintings and sculptures.  Now look down on what you are sitting on.  Would you call it a work of art?  Someone had to be creative and think up the design of your chair.

This Thursday, September 16th, the Minneapolis Institute of Art is curating Chairevolution!  300 Years of Designing the Chair.  The exhibit examines the history of chair design using examples from the museum’s permanent collection of chairs.  By displaying the development of chairs over time, the exhibit showcases the chair’s evolution of function and aesthetics.

Find out more after the jump.
