The Sitting Room in Excelsior, MN

Many times Twin Cities Design Scene features stores that are in the Twin Cities metro area, but if you go on a day trip, there are so many great shops to explore! For example, if you travel a bit out of the cities, you will discover that Excelsior, MN has a wonderful array of design resources. The Sitting Room is one of the beautiful finds you will discover when visiting Excelsior. Started by Kate Regan in 2003 as a small design studio in Minnetonka, she now has expanded the showroom and moved the design studio to Exselsior. The showroom features classic and chic furniture and accessories. I had the chance to interview Kate over email and learn more about her design services and gorgeous store! Read my interview with Kate after the jump and view photos from the showroom!

When did you first open the store and what was your initial concept/vision behind the store?
I opened as a small design studio in Minnetonka in 2003. Our expanded boutique and design firm is currently located in Excelsior. We have been here for almost 2 years and this charming lakeside town continues to be the perfect location for us.

The original vision, which is still true to this day, was to create an environment that would inspire clients. The best thing we hear our customers say is ” this is how I want my home to feel.” When we hear this, it really validates our decision to expand our retail space!

Over the years, has that concept changed? If so, how?
The concept has remained the same, however the retail boutique has grown. I wanted clients to have the opportunity to see and feel quality home furnishings in a cohesive setting. We are able to showcase a complete lifestyle viewpoint including furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories. We currently have 8 – 10 vignettes in the boutique compared to one when we first opened.

How would you describe the Sitting Room’s design aesthetic?
Our building is filled with architectural charm, including original brick walls and reclaimed wide plank floors. I love textiles; from printed linens to graphic textures, the overall palette is soft and neutral with pops of colors added through art work, accessories and pillows.

What types of items does the Sitting Room carry?
Custom upholstery, casegoods, (including dining room and bedroom), lighting, accessories, rugs and a small, select assortment of gift items.

From where do you source your furniture?
Vanguard Furniture, Drexel Heritage, Stanford Furniture, Lorts and a lot of smaller boutique lines that keep us fresh and unique.Tell me about custom options in your store.

Tell me more about customization.
Almost anything can be customized!

Do any design experiences stand out as being most meaningful/memorable?
I worked with two clients to rebuild and furnish their homes after devastating house fires. It was so rewarding to find pieces that were meaningful and would truly resonate with members of the family.

What do you and your team find most rewarding about working in interior design?
I love seeing the complete transformation of any space! It really doesn’t matter the scope of the project, there is true satisfaction in creating a space that is perfect for those that call it home.

What are your interior design services?
Full service!

What are your store hours?
Mon-Sat: 10am-5pm. Even though the weather has been warm, these hours still reflect our winter schedule. Stay tuned for summer hours!
